VERY NICE CONDITION MODEL 1833 DRAGOON SABER MINUS THE SCABBARD

$650.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 476-104

The overall length of the saber is approx. 39.50 inches from point to pommel. The very clean bright blade has a rounded quill back with a true edge that has several very tiny nicks scattered over its surface. Clearly engraved on the obverse ricasso is “N.P. AMES / CUTLER / SPRINGFIELD / 1838” in four lines. Beneath this are stamped the inspector’s initials “W.S.” The reverse ricasso area is strongly engraved with a horizontal “UNITED STATES” in script over a line of laurel leaves. The original buff leather washer remains and is in excellent shape.

The grips are wood covered with leather and wrapped in twisted silver wire. Leather shows hardly any wear. Wire is complete. The backstrap and pommel cap are brass as is the ferrule at the bottom of the grip. The knuckle bow expands into three branches and ends in a quillon that is stamped on one side with “W.S.”

A very nice example of an early mounted service blade.  [ad]
