Manufactured by Ames of Cabotville, MA and dated 1849.  This is a superb example!  The heavy cavalry sabre was well-regarded by troopers, with the exception of its weight, earning the nickname “wristbreaker.”  The Model 1840 is also popular with collectors, due to its breadth of military service extending from the Mexican War era and throughout the Civil War years.  The record shows that the government contracted for 2,000 Ames wristbreakers in 1849 and the company delivered 2,940.  The overall condition of this sabre is excellent.  The brass has a dark bronzed looking patina, the leather grip is in fine standing and the wire wrap is entirely tight from pommel cap to the guard.  The pommel cap is stamped with inspectors’ initials “WD” and “JWR.”  Ricasso markings are bold, with “US” and inspector’s marks “WD” and “Ames Mfg. Co. Cabotville 1849.”  The leather washer is present at the ricasso.  The entire blade retains a gorgeous finish, free of any pitting.  There is one nick approximately 1/3 distance from the tip.  The blade fits snugly into the scabbard.  The scabbard has an even, chocolate patina from the throat to the drag.  Both rings are of the same patina and move freely.
