US MODEL 1860 CAVALRY SABRE, DATED 1864

$650.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1032-84

The standard issue weapon for Union cavalrymen, the light cavalry sabre saw active field service and troopers generally returned home with them at the war’s end.  This sabre’s brass hilt has a dark patina, with early wear evident on the leather grip.  The wire wrap is generally secure, with some “play” on the middle bands.  The washer is present below the ricasso.  Stamping is discernable in good light “U.S. CEW 1864.” No manufacturer markings are visible; however, the inspector’s marks illuminate some possibilities.  Government inspector Charles E. Wilson served from 1846-1865.  He predominantly inspected and stamped the Model 1860 cavalry sabres of Emerson and Silver and Mansfield and Lamb.  The blade has an even, dark patina from ricasso to tip with traces of light surface rust.  The scabbard has a similar patina from throat to drag with two small indentations at the lower half.  The blade fits snugly into the scabbard.

A fine display sabre with desirable wartime date!  [jc]
