This original specimen features a cast brass hilt with a simulated wire wrapped handle with no guard. Knuckle-bow on the obverse side blank, reverse side stamped “MS” for Massachusetts State which indicates that the sword was delivered to the state of Massachusetts during the Mexican War.
The single edged blade features a stopped single fuller and a ricasso stamped “US/RC” for Rufus Chandler armory inspector 1831-1850. Reverse side “N.P. Ames/Cabotville/1848 bright black with age spots. Blade measures 21 1/8 inches, slightly shortened. Brass hilt nice untouched patina.
Leather scabbard has old repair 4 inches above drag. Crackling to leather finish, otherwise stitching intact. Original drag and throat have nice untouched patina. [WS]
