This sword was a product of the Ames Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer of swords, tools and cutlery in Chicopee, Massachusetts. Ames was also involved in iron and bronze foundry. Ames was a major provider of swords, light artillery and heavy ordnance in the Civil War. Established in 1774 in Chelmsford, Mass. by the Ames family by brothers Nathan and James. By 1829 the brothers moved their business to a location on the Chicopee River in Springfield. By the time the Civil War started the Ames Company was the biggest producer of military items for the Union.

Obverse side of blade stamped at the ricasso “US/A.H.K./1864. Armory inspector Albert H. Kirkham 1862-1864. Reverse side made by/Ames Mfg./Chicopee/Mass. Stamping faint on some letters. Black semi-gray patina with age spots, no rust/pitting. Cast brass hilt with simulated wire wrapped handle. Obverse side of knuckle-bow with initials “G.W.C.” by armory inspector George W. Chapin 1862-1864. Reverse side blank. Hilt nice untouched mellow yellow patina.

Leather scabbard has two weak spots. One in middle of scabbard, second one near drag. If not handled properly it will break. Original throat and drag. Leather no flaking, stitching strong.  [ws]
