The drawn saber meas. approx. 41.00 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 35.00 inches with a central fuller that is 27.50 inches long. The surface of the blade is very clean and bright. There is very little mottling visible and the edge has several very small nicks that can be felt more than seen. There are also some small areas of surface pitting on the bottom third of the blade toward the point. The blade has wonderfully strong detailed etching. The obverse ricasso area is etched with “AMES MFG. CO.” over “CHICOPEE” over “MASS.” This side of the blade is etched with a spread-winged with all details visible and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband that has every letter discernable. This is flanked by equally detailed scrollwork, a panoply of arms and floral decoration. The reverse side has similar decoration and detail but with a block “U.S.” replacing the eagle. Leather washer is present at the base of the blade.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows almost no wear and the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard have a bright gilt finish.
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard is bright with tiny scattered spots of oxidation and no dents. There are some small areas of light mottling. Drag is stamped with inspector’s initials “A.D.K.”
A wonderful example of a mounted officer’s saber. [ad]
