Presented here is a nice example of a Boyle and Gamble Confederate foot officer’s sword complete with its original leather scabbard. Typically carried by many Southern infantry officers during the War Between the States, this totally unmarked, standard production steel edged weapon bears a very strong resemblance to the Federal Model 1850 Foot Officer’s Sword.   Though this specimen is completely void of maker markings or stampings, it some of the classic features of the well-known Richmond, VA firm of Boyle and Gamble. Those features include flats with unstopped fullers and a distinctive, tiered brass pommel cap and crude castings.

The full length, single-edged steel blade measures 29.50 inches long by 1” wide and has a slightly rounded back.   A 20.00 inch long unstopped wide fuller runs down each flat. There are no narrow fullers. Edge is good with several minor nicks. Total length of the slightly curved sword, including grips, measures 35.00 inches.  The non-etched blade itself wears a pleasing, light gray, dusky sheen overall with scattered areas of slight pinprick rusting, mostly near the point.  No evidence visible of sharpening to the blade’s true edge. Blade does not retain its leather pad or washer. Ricassos are unmarked.

The center-swell, wood handled grips are covered with a very strong, original brown russet leather wrap that is remarkably tight. Light flaking or leather chipping is visible. Grips are wound with seventeen turns of thin twisted brass wire which is tight. Grips feature a brass pommel cap of the Phrygian-helmet design trimmed with a cast ivy leaf pattern. Cap has hints of a crude mold seam running down its face. All brass wears a rich and mellow patina. This Confederate infantry officer’s sword exhibits a brass knucklebow mated to a single-band, cast brass hilt with a slightly turned guard.   Brass hilt is tight to the blade. Hilt’s decorative cutout band is cast with a crude floral design that shows wear on both the interior and underside.

The unadorned leather scabbard is a classic specimen, with a good body complete with its brass collar, brass suspension mounts, and brass rings.   Scabbards of all the B&G swords are said to have been made by the R.H. Bosher Carriage Factory in Richmond, VA. Leather surface has cracking, crazing and some flaking consistent with age and use but no breaks. Side seam remains intact overall.  Each of the brass bands and mounts are in very good condition with the top mount being a little loose.  Both brass mounts and the drag exhibit single lines of edge tooling. Leather on the scabbard has shrunk some causing the hilt to sit about an inch above the throat when the sword is sheathed.

All brass furniture has acquired a mellow bronze patina.

This original, Richmond-made sword of Boyle and Gamble manufacture, together with its original leather scabbard, is a wonderful, honest CS veteran of the Civil War.  [ad]
