This sword is in spectacular condition and comes from the collection of William Cooper. It is a beautiful example of the post-1922 USMA West Point cadet’s sword, which replaced the 1870s pattern, and used the West Point seal, with the helmet correctly facing the heraldic “dexter,” with a silver color grip. The ricasso is “Challenger” trademarked by N.S. Meyer and marked “West Germany,” giving it a Vietnam War, 1960s era, date.

The blade is bright with vivid etching and thin frosting that includes a US seal, “United States Military Academy” in a ribbon scroll, cadets parading with flags, West Point buildings, monuments, and statues. The hilt has a cast brass lantern shaped pommel with US eagle, and a pierced scroll for a sword knot. The grip is silver colored and made in imitation of a coiled wire wrap. The quillons terminate in eagle heads fashioned to look like they are biting a snake that coils around them, a nice symbol of defiance. The blade pad is in place. The scabbard is bright, a chrome finish, with cast brass mounts intact, all with good color.

This is a nice example of a U.S. Army regulation sword.[sr]
