Militia horseman’s battle saber is an original contract of 1818 piece made by the firm of Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut. Some 10,600 sabers were contracted to Nathan Starr by the US Ordnance Dept. in Dec 1818 for use by the militia cavalry in the various states.
Delivered between 1820 and 1822, this Starr saber measures 37½” long and has a 26” long wide unstopped fuller. The clipped-point steel blade has been cleaned and exhibits a dull sheen overall. Light rust pitting and three very small nicks to the blade edge. Obverse ricasso is stamped “US / P (proved) / LS (Luther Sage) / N.STARR”. No washer or pad. The reverse “P” type iron hilt is tight to the tang. Grips are wood covered with black leather and have an iron ferrule at the guard.
Scabbard is iron and the original japanned black color has been painted over with a rust-red colored paint. Shows much scratching and flaking. Has two suspension rings mounted to the top edge of the scabbard. Small remnants of a leather strap or belt slings attached to each ring. In good overall condition, would make an interesting specimen to any blade display or collection.
