MODEL 1841 NAVY CUTLASS - 1ST YEAR OF PRODUCTION

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-2887

The pattern for the Model 1841 Navy cutlass was not finalized between the Ames Company and the Government until late 1841. As far as can be told the first contract was for 3000 cutlasses. The second contract is known to have been dated March 23, 1843 so all model 1841 Navy cutlasses dated 1841 or 1842 are from this first contract. Such is the case with the cutlass offered here.

The blade is double edged and finished bright. It has some very light surface pitting near the point and also some light mottling. Each of the edges has numerous small nicks. Most are so slight that they can barely be felt while running the finger over them. The markings on the ricasso are faint. On one “USN” over “1842” can be made out but nothing else. The opposite side has some faint markings but none that could be made out. The hilt is all brass and looks to have been cleaned. The grip is cast with a feathered surface. Cast into each side of the pommel is a spread-winged eagle. The knuckle bow and counterguard are of one piece being narrow at the top and widening over its length ending in a quillon. There is no scabbard..
