[See Peterson, p.5, fig. 52]. Maker-mark [obverse ricasso]: “N.P. Ames / Cabotville / Mass”; US marking [reverse]: “USN / 1842”. Markings slightly worn, though entirely legible.

This cutlass design was influenced by earlier 1833 “Roman” foot artillery sword, which it greatly resembles. The straight, double-edged blade with median ridge, measures 21.125” in length, 1.625” in width. Although strong and basically straight, the sighted blade exhibits a slight and symmetrical rippling effect. Exhibits medium bright patina with three or four minor dings & some age spotting near the tip. Cast brass hilt assembly is tight and symmetrical, and Displays traces of dark red paint, decoratively applied to the counter-guard, and the “scalloped “eagle-feather” handle, which is held in place by three transverse rivets. The guard is a broad strip of brass which expands from the pommel to form a wide flat counter-guard, with thickened outer edges for additional strength. Quillon terminates above the blade in a disc. Outer guard displays large stamped “2D/ N12” marking. Pommel stamped with pair of spread eagles.

Black leather scabbard with brass tip & throat, with sown center seam. The moderately fragile leather displays bruises & some cracking. Brass-work exhibits light scratching. Else VG, and a fine collectible. M1841 cutlasses with brass-work scabbards are few and far between.
