Item Code: 172-3235

Here is an example of a carbine swivel hook used by Federal cavalrymen during the Civil War. Constructed of polished steel, this marked artifact has two components: snap hook and its steel sling loop.  Measures 6½” in total length.  Inside facing of the snap hook bears a strong stamping of “O. B. NORTH & Co. / NEW HAVEN, Ct.”.  When attached to one end of the trooper’s leather sling via the sling loop, the swivel’s snap hook secured the man’s carbine at the weapon’s sling bar and rendered the trooper’s hands free maintain the reins while mounted.  Once shiny bright, all metal areas now wear a pleasing dusky gray patina with scattered areas of light peppery pitting.  This maker-marked swivel is a very fine element of a typical Federal cavalryman’s issued equipment.  Perfect for display in any cavalry collection.
