Made for the Special Model 1861 contract rifle-musket, the lockplate is an original Lamson, Goodnow and Yale Co piece in excellent, about unused condition. Circa 1862-1864, 50,000 lockplates were made in Windsor, VT and Sheffield Falls, MA under the government contract awarded for rifled-muskets during the Civil War. The lock markings were different for each of the three years they were made. This 1864 dated plate lacks the large eagle motif and exhibits a three-line marking of “U.S. / L. G. & Y. / WINDSOR Vt”. Stamping on the plate is strong. This LG&Y lockplate, produced to fit the regulation M1861 rifle, exhibits the “S” shaped curved hammer at the rest position on the face and is complete with the springs and tumbler assembly on the reverse. The date is clearly marked on the lockplate face behind the hammer with “1864”. Lockplate exterior is shiny bright and appears never to have been cleaned. Surface has few scattered spots of dark oxidation. Interior of the lock shows bluing turned to a dark gray. Lockplate is a fine specimen that would enhance any Civil War arms collection.
