19th CENTURY ENGLISH WALNUT SHOT GUN CASE

Closed, this walnut box meas. approx. 32.75 inches long x 9.75 inches wide x 2.75 high. The box has two concentric brass rings at top of center and all corners have brass reinforcements. Front has a brass oval keyhole escutcheon while each end has a brass hook and eye closure device. Hinges are also of brass.

Wood surface shows some dirt and wear from age and storage. Left corner of lid has a crack that is approx. 4.75 inches long with another above it, close to the hinge edge, for another 5.00 or so inches. There is also numerous small scuffs and scratches.

Interior of lid has a wonderful paper label with the English Coat of Arms and “COLCHESTER / HIGH STREET / P. HAST, GUN MAKER.”

Interior of bottom has one long and one short horizontal compartment. There are signs of other removed dividers.  [ad]
