This is a steel swivel and snap-hook device from a cavalry shoulder sling. Specifically this hook would attach to a trooper’s weapon so it would not be lost if dropped. These slings were used extensively throughout the Civil War and well into the post-war period of the Indian wars as well. Marked with a number "7" on inside of hook.
Consists of a snap hook, single link, and a rolling belt loop. Semi-bright finish with light surface rust. [jet]
