GALLAGER CARBINE – EARLY PRODUCTION

$1,595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-341

Richardson & Overman of Philadelphia manufactured around 17,700 Gallager carbines during the Civil War. Most of them were 50 caliber, percussion, single shot breechloaders. The markings on the lock are GALLAGER/PATENTED JULY 1860 and the serial number. When manufactured they had iron mountings and patchbox, blued barrel, walnut stock and casehardened frames. On the left side of the frame was a sling ring. The percussion nipple identifies early production models.

This is serial number 3935. All iron mountings and patchbox have a dark brown, un-cleaned patina as well as a matching frame and barrel. Stock has signs of normal use as well as shows having been in the saddle. Cartouche is not visible due to wear under the carbine ring. All stampings are light but visible. Action is functional. Bore is semi-bright with very good rifling but some area of light pitting.

Just a few of the Union cavalry units that were issued the Gallager were the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Ohio, 3rd West Virginia and the 13th Tennessee.
