Here is an original Civil War Smith carbine in fine condition used by Union forces during the Civil War. A single-shot, percussion firearm, the weapon is a .50 caliber, breechloading carbine invented and patented by a medical physician named Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York in late 1855. Carbine measures 39½" long overall and weighs a hefty seven pounds and eight ounces. The two piece black walnut stock is made up of a 9" forearm held by a single barrel band. Stock exhibits no visible cartouche but does exhibit stampings "G. P." on stock directly behind the blued ferrule. Stock may have been refinished at one time. Just few normal dings and dents. The 21 5/8" long round / octagonal-shaped barrel surface wears a pleasing dark gray patina with very light scattered pinprick rusting. Original blade front sight and rear sight.

Inspector markings "B" and "P" visible on the barrel at the left facet near the frame. Frame housing is stamped with serial number "8322". Left side of breech opposite the hammer bears an excellent patent mark "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMMER / BALTIMORE U.S.A." Directly beneath the sling bar is a sharp maker's stamp "MANUFACTURED BY / AMN. M'CH. WKS. / SPRINGFIELD MASS.". Strong patent mark "SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857" at front of breech at front of sling bar with sling ring. All stampings are clear and sharp. Furniture is iron and finished blue. Carbine exhibits very crisp mechanics. Inspector mark "B" stamped in stock at the buttstrap tang. All screws excellent and not buggered. Bore with six-groove rifling is absolutely mint. The Smith carbine saw extensive service with the following volunteer cavalry regiments: 1st Connecticut, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.
