Presented here is Sharps Model 1852 carbine referred to as the ‘Slant Breech’ or ‘Sloping Breech’ model. The Model 1852 is one of an estimated 5000 such pieces made and is the forerunner of the more famous model Sharps carbines of the Civil War. The single-shot, percussion firearm is a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. The 1852 date on this carbine signifies the patent year in which Mr. Sharps invented his ingenious pellet priming mechanical system and integrated it into the upper forward section of the lockplate. It also employs Sharps’ first side-hammer, percussion “slanting breech” frame design. Referred to as a Model 1852 ‘Slanting Breech’ carbine, this specimen was produced by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company in Hartford, CT between 1853 and 1855. Key features this shortarm possesses is the long retaining spring on right in front of the ‘comma’ shaped lever hinge pin. Also has the staple-type sling ring on the left side of the carbine and no small spring stud mounted on the right side of near the forend.

Carbine is in very good condition and carries serial # 7033. Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and the slanting breech to accommodate the breechblock and lockplate. Breechblock carries the inspector mark “J. Honiss” double-stamped on its side. Lockplate is crisply stamped with “C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1852” while its tang shows the markings of “C. SHARPS / PATENT / 1848”. Stampings clear and sharp. Barrel breech exhibits the maker’s name with a three-line address of “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUF’G CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in weak markings. Rear folding sight exhibits the Robbins & Lawrence patent markings. Original pellet priming system is present but inoperable. Brass blade front sight sits 5/8” from the muzzle while the rear sight is a small, unusual ‘squirrel-ear’ type.

Wood stock surface is smooth with no cracks or breaks but does show some normal dings and dents scattered overall. The brass patch box interior is stamped with the numerals “29” on the door and two indiscernible digits on the box floor. No cartouches visible. Bore is semi-bright with just scattered oxidation spots. Should clean to shiny bright. The rifling of six ‘lands and grooves’ appears sharp and crisp. Lock screws are in very good condition and not buggered up but the hammer screw is missing. All metal surfaces of the carbine appear a mottled, dark plum-gray patina. Patch box, butt plate and barrel band all brass and have a pleasing bronze finish. Carbine exhibits very strong, crisp mechanics.

This Model 1852 Sharps ‘slant breech’ carbine is an outstanding early arm of the military and presents the collector an excellent opportunity to enhance their firearm collection.
