Presented here is a Model 1840 Hall-North .52 caliber, breechloading percussion smoothbore carbine in the Type 2 variation. Manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut between 1840 and 1843, this piece is one of only 6,500 units made. Top flat of receiver is thinly stamped with a five-line address showing: “US / S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN. / 1840”. Carbine has a 21” round barrel with two barrel bands that secure it to the walnut stock. Faint hints of original case on hammer and top plate while the steel barrel and receiver retains much of the original factory lacquer browning. Barrel does show areas of some flaking and scratches near the middle band. Overall has a smooth surface. Bore has strong rifling with some surface grime but should clean to semi-bright. Receiver has a single sub-inspector stamp “B”. Mechanics strong. Black walnut stock has shows numerous dings and dents along with a 2” long crack at right side beneath hammer. Stock has a single government cartouche visible at the left edge of the stock flat. A thin 1” surface crack visible on the cartouche. Sling ring is integral to the rear of the triggerguard plate. Hand carved initials “E. M.” set into bottom of stock at the sling ring. Carbine retains its original button-head ramrod.
