AUSTRIAN M1842 PERCUSSION MUZZLE LOADING CARBINE

$1,050.00 SOLD

Item Code: G3239

Presented is a Model 1842 Austrian carbine in good plus condition. Carbine, also called the ‘Kammer-Karabiner’, features a huge.75 caliber barrel that is rifled with twelve lands and grooves. Originally known as a “tube lock’ carbine, these short arms were altered to percussion after 1854 and many saw service in the American Civil War as agents for both sides sought them out in Europe and sent many carbines home for use.

Carbine measures 30” long overall and features a heavy, one-piece stock, possibly sap wood. Stock is marked with a thin, partial identification of hand-carved letters into the high cheek piece on the left side. The double-lined letters read “J A Skovey” or the like with a smattering of other small letters over the entire stock. Stock shows wear and has a coating of old varnish and appears to never been cleaned.

Carbine also has an integral sling bar with an attached saddle ring on the left side of stock. All gunmetal wears a moderate surface of hard rust pitting and exhibits a dark brown colored patina. 14½” long barrel secures to the stock with one large barrel band. Barrel stamped with one inspector mark “G” on left facet and with other stampings on the right facet in front of lockplate.

Bore shows strong land and grooves but has some pitting and oxidation. Crude notch rear sight on breech and its original front sight. Hammer and lockplate are void of any markings. An imported, hand-held cannon that saw service in the Civil War and possibly even CS use.
