U.S. M1873 PATTERN ‘TRAPDOOR’ CARBINE

$850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3358

Produced by the Springfield Armory, the Model 1873 ‘Trapdoor’, .45-70 caliber, breechloading, centerfire carbine is one of over 230,000 of all types of rifles and carbines made from 1868 through 1891. Serial numbered 137714, this carbine was produced sometime after 1886. The carbine was one of the first of the ‘Trapdoor” Springfields’ chambered for the 45-70 cartridge. The US Ordnance Dept had determined that standardization of the US small arms to 45 caliber (45-70) was most advisable beginning in 1873.

The carbine has a round barrel that measures 22” long and retains its low-arched breechblock. Barrel does not appear to have been shortened. All gunmetal, including the lockplate, receiver, hammer bands, springs, triggerguard and butt plate wear a fine coat of rust pinprick pitting overall. Lockplate is mounted flush to the stock with no bevel and is completely unmarked. Breechblock is marked “US / MODEL / 1873.” No proofmarks. Mechanics strong. Rifling is good but bore is dirty and lightly pitted; should clean to semi-bright. Barrel has the long range rear sight. Walnut stock has been heavily cleaned and sanded. Stock exhibits a major crack along the wrist area behind the barrel tang and also at the heel at butt plate. No cartouches visible. Has the compartment in butt for the cleaning rod. Sling bar on left side is broken and missing its sling ring.
