Regarded as one of the most accurate of all the cavalry arms used during the War is the Maynard carbine. This metallic cartridge, breech-loading 2nd Model Maynard carbine was the invention of Doctor Edward Maynard from New Jersey who patented his first model carbine in 1851. The U.S. Ordnance Dept contracted for over 20,000 2nd Model single shot, percussion, .50 caliber carbines which were produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee, Mass. Issued mostly to the Federal cavalry, the Maynard proved a lightweight, very serviceable and dependable carbine that saw extensive service in the field. This carbine specimen carries low serial #10983, has a 20” round barrel, no forend or comb, and measures a total length of 36½.”

Black walnut stock is in excellent original condition and bears two very good government cartouches on the left side wrist area. Stock also has a few scattered, but light dings and dents.  Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and saddle ring on the left side of the breech frame, and a two-leaf rear sight. Stock has a curved iron butt plate.

The round barrel has a partial octagonal breech area and exhibits a smooth, dark gray / blue patina overall with minor light abrasions in the rear sight area. Some light pitting. Frame, hammer area, triggerguard and butt plate show traces of the original bluing. Case colors on the hammer.  Bore is minty, very bright with three-groove rifling. Barrel’s left facet shows the government inspector’s mark of “A. J. N.” All maker stampings on the obverse frame are clear, sharp, and read, “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS” in three lines. Reverse side clearly stamped “EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC. 6, 1859” in four lines. Sub-inspector stampings found on butt plate and saddle ring bar. Serial # 10983 on triggerguard tang. Mechanics are crisp. A fine Maynard.
