The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a very good specimen of the New Model 1863 Sharp’s carbine that features serial # C, 28586.

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a ‘straight-breech’ type lockplate fitted to its walnut stock and forend. Barrel address strong with “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight. “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. Stock and forend appear never to have been cleaned. Two, strong inspector cartouches at the sling bar area. Major components have sub-inspector marks visible. Left side of forend at the tip shows small indents in the wood. Lock screws are original and in good condition. Barrel wears a smooth dark plum / brown patina overall. No trace of original colors present.

Maker markings and patent designations are sharp and distinct. Serial number sharp and strongly stamped unto the upper plate tang. Breechblock operating lever mechanics are crisp. Iron bar tight and retains its iron sling ring. Bore with its six-groove rifling has moderate rust pitting in areas and should clean up to semi-bright. This specimen of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine is a fine, original percussion cavalry shortarm of the Civil War Union army.
