Item Code: 838-13

Here is an original Civil War ‘Burnside’ 5th Model cavalry carbine specimen in good original condition. Produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island, this cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine was one of some 43,000 such weapons manufactured. Carbine employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cased cartridge. Firearm also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch in the triggerguard is activated and allows for quick insertion of the cartridge. Patent date marks visible on breech block. The shoulder arm bears serial #39139 and exhibits a dull, medium gray patina on its metal surfaces.

Maker’s stamp “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856” on the breech is thin but clear. Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows the smooth operation of the breech in the breechblock. Screw head is disfigured. Barrel shows light mottling. Behind hammer on lock tang is “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Bore minty bright along most of its length with some build-up of dirt at muzzle. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple present. Numerous sub-inspector marks visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in fair to good, original condition with no cartouche visible. Stock exhibits a number of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. Initials “RS” poorly carved into both sides of butt. Carving is period. Fitted with a cavalry sling bar, carry ring, forend and barrel band.

A good condition, original Civil War ‘Burnside’ 5th Model carbine.
