RARE 1ST TYPE LINDER CARBINE

$4,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 838-10

This carbine was produced by Edward Linder of Manchester, New Hampshire probably at the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company facility in a total quantity of about 6,500.

The firearm is a .58 caliber, percussion, breechloading weapon. The single shot weapon is loaded by turning a rotating collar locking device 180 degrees to the left. This causes the breechblock to pop up for loading the cartridge. Round barrel is 20.00 inches long. All iron are mountings finished bright. Stock is walnut with sling ring is mounted on left side. Barrel is secured to the stock by a screw. There is no barrel band.

This particular specimen is in good to fine condition. All the metal surfaces are finished bright as required. Surfaces also show light wear and very light mottling. Lockplate is devoid of any markings which is correct. Top of breech strongly stamped “EDWARD LINDER’S / PATENT/ MARCH 29, 1859.” Area of marking has very light peppering of pitting. Original nipple is present and fairly clean with just a slight build-up of dirt and dust at base. Rear sight is mounted near barrel tang at rear of breech.

The rotating collar handle shows light wear. The collar handle is a little off square and will unscrew easily if desired. Handle has some surface discoloration. Collar swings well and breech pops up properly. Hammer action is strong and holds at half-cock. Bore is clean and rifling is good.

Walnut stock has some minor dings, dents and scratches consistent with use but no cracks. There is what looks to be a faint inspector’s cartouche stamped into the wood just forward of the buttplate tang.

This is a clean and attractive weapon.
