Approximately 20,000 of these carbines were produced from 1886 to 1889.

Weapon has a 22.00 inch barrel that retains 40% of its original blue with the rest being a dull gray. Barrel has light mottling but no pitting. Correct blade front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. Top of sight is marked with a letter “C” for carbine. Sight is complete and operates well. Left side of the barrel is stamped at breech with “V. P.” and eaglehead. Bore is very clean with good rifling.

Barrel is attached to carbine stock by a single barrel band that retains 80% of the bluing. Top of band is grooved to allow sight leaf to rest on it.

Lock retains most of the original blue with a spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer and “U. S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Stampings are strong. Action works properly. Breech is mostly gray on the exterior with some case colors on the inside. Serial number on breech is 317905. Top of breech at hinge is clearly marked “U.S. MODEL 1884.”

Wood stock shows wear from age, use and storage. No cartouche marks are visible. There are no cracks. Saddle bar and ring is mounted on stock opposite the lock. Triggerguard and buttplate are mostly gray.   [AD]
