ORIGINAL 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE

Item Code: 882-01

Here is an original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in good serviceable condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

All metal surfaces on this carbine wear a heavy, spotted mottled appearance with numerous discolorations and areas of the slightest pin-prick pitting. No original finish remains.

Barrel has original front and rear sight and is held to the forearm by a single iron band. Bore is good but needs cleaning and MAY scrub up to bright.

Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 33050. This area is also clearly stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25, 1856.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech.

Lockplate is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” This marking is difficult to read due to the mottling mentioned above. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present and shows light wear. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in fair, original condition and has two strong cartouche marks on the left wrist area. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. Stock also exhibits some wear around the holes for the forearm screw and the lockplate screw. Present just above the lockplate is a small deep gouge approx. 0.50 an inch long. There is also a slight narrow gap running along the bottom edge of the lockplate. This begins where the lockplate meets the receiver and runs rearward approx.1.75 inches. This gap appears to be from the shrinking of the wood as there is no evidence of a chip.

Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring.

A nice original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine that saw some use.    [ad]
