Item Code: 172-4251

This is the single shot Merrill "First Type" carbine, .54 caliber, with button latch. The Merrill carbine bears a unique breech system with a long lever released by a spring latch. It is percussion primed and uses a paper cartridge. Manufactured by H. Merrill of Baltimore Maryland. Standard features include brass buttplate, brass patch box, brass trigger guard, single brass band, saddle ring and bar on the left side, two leaf hinged sight, rifled with three grooves. On later production, the breech latch is secured with buttons. Stamped on lock forward of the hammer, "J. H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY, 1858 / APL. 9. MAY 21 - 28 - 61". The serial number appears to the rear of the hammer and on the breach tang. Breech lever is marked "J. H. MERRILL BALTO. / PAT. JULY, 1858". Additional inspector marks inside the loading lever and inside of the patch box flap.

This carbine is serial number 10686, and this appears to the rear of the hammer, and on the breach tang. Appearance of iron is a pleasing dark color, brass parts are a mellow yellow patina. The maker marks are strong, serial numbers are matching, wood solid with dings and scratches from age and use. Wood has a dark, rich color, with some cracks in the small of the stock emanating from the receiver. No visible cartouches. Sights, barrel band, bar and saddle ring are intact.  Bore needs cleaning but rifling is sharp. Action is sharp and fully functional. This is a nice example of a rarely encountered carbine. [jet]
