The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a very fine specimen of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine that features serial # C, 5739.

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a ‘straight-breech’ type lockplate fitted to its walnut shoulder stock and fore stock. Barrel address strong with “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight. “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight. A ll wood is excellent with original finish and deep, rich color. Both portions feature sub inspector’s initials stamped cleanly into the wood. Two strong inspector cartouches are found in the sling bar area. Major components have sub-inspector marks visible. Lock screws are original and in good condition. All gunmetal is in excellent condition. Bluing has turned to a smooth dark plum / brown patina overall. Only the flat of the sling bar has been cleaned to bright.

Maker markings and patent designations are sharp and distinct. Serial number sharp and strongly stamped unto the upper plate tang. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp. Iron bar tight and retains its iron sling ring. Bore with its six-groove rifling is bright.

This New Model 1863 Sharps carbine is a very fine example of a favorite Civil War cavalry weapon.  [jet]
