VERY GOOD 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 911-45

Original Civil War Burnside 5th Model cavalry carbine that is in good original condition. Produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island, this cavalry model .54 caliber, single-shot, breech-loading carbine was one of some 43,000 such weapons manufactured. Carbine employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cased cartridge. Shortarm also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch in the triggerguard is activated and allows for quick insertion of the cartridge. Serial number is visible on breech block. The shoulder arm bears serial #14758.

Barrel exhibits scattered blue and some light oxidation. Bore is very clean with good rifling. Front and rear sights are proper for this model. Barrel is clearly stamped “CAST STEEL 1862” between rear sight and single barrel band.

Metal surfaces of the triggerguard, receiver, hammer, barrel band and lock wear a mottled appearance. Side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows the smooth operation of the breech in the breechblock. Top of the breech bears maker’s stamp “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25TH 1856” while the lock behind the hammer has faint markings of “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.”  Mechanics are strong and crisp. Nipple is original and in good condition. Numerous sub-inspector marks visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is good. There is the outline of a single thin cartouche on the left wrist. Also, just to the rear of the barrel band there is an old chip with another just to the rear of the lockplate. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age. There are no cracks. Weapon is fitted with a cavalry sling bar and ring.

A very good condition, original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine. [ad]
