This weapon is a Civil War Model 1863 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture. Carbine serial # 95803 is located on the receiver tang. Overall the firearm measures 39” long and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock. All gunmetal has moderate to heavy mottling.
Barrel is dark with light mottling and hints of blue. Barrel is stamped with a strong “NEW MODEL 1863” behind the original folding rear sight. Strong maker’s three-line address is stamped forward of rear sight. Bore is very good with nice rifling.
Lockplate face has clear maker and patent stampings back of the hammer and on left side above sling bar, despite the mottling. Screws show light wear. Mechanics are good. Original nipple is present and mostly clean. Top of breech block shows some small amounts of pitting.
Wood surface displays scattered light dents and scratches. Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with one iron band that has much blue remaining. Entire stock has a dark untouched surface. There are no visible inspector’s cartouches.
