MODEL 1859 SHARPS CARBINE WITH DOUBLESET TRIGGERS

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 909-31

This Model 1859 Sharps carbine was made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1859 to 1862. This weapon is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture including a brass patchbox. Weapon bears serial #36179.

The overall length of the carbine is 39” long and it features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock. All iron parts have been heavily cleaned and bear a bright appearance. The brass buttplate and patchbox appear untouched.

Barrel has much of its original finish. It is stamped with a weak “NEW MODEL 1859” between the breech and the original folding rear sight. Maker’s three-line address is forward of the rear sight and is a good readable stamping. Rifling is good and the bore has some light dust and dirt that should easily clean up. The single iron barrel band is present and has been cleaned like the rest of the iron.

Bright iron lockplate, breech and hammer. Original nipple is present. Receiver has some scattered pitting but nothing major. Action works well. The hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls properly. This particular weapon has had a double-set trigger mechanism added. Lock markings of “R. S. LAWRENCE PAT. / APRIL 12th 1859” and “C. SHARPS PAT. / OCT. 5th 1862” are crisp. Opposite side of receiver is clearly marked “C. SHARPS PAT. / SEPT. 12th 1848.”

Stock is free of cracks and has minor wear however it has been refinished and lacks an inspector’s cartouche. Forearm has been altered in shape with a more rounded base a tapered nose and there is no band spring. Wood has a very attractive finish. Patchbox operates properly. Screw heads show light wear. Saddle bar and ring mounted on left side with a sling swivel present at bottom of butt.  [AD]
