MAYNARD CARBINE 2ND MODEL, “MODEL OF 1863”

$1,495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3672

The Massachusetts Arms Company manufactured around 20,000 of these carbines between 1863 and 1865. This differs from the first model in that it has no patch box, or tape primer system among some other minor changes. Serial number 10461. The frame is marked on the right side, “MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS” and the left side “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC 6,1859”. Barrel retains much of its original bluing, as does the hammer and trigger. Bore is bright and clean with weak rifling; .50 caliber. Barrel marked “GWS” by inspector on left side near breech. Hammer holds at half cock but not at full cock. This single shot percussion breechloader is serial number 10461. Walnut stock is very good. Two cartouches are plainly visible. Initials “MU” are carved on both sides of the butt stock. A very attractive specimen.   [jet]
