RESTORED, RARE CONFEDERATE BILHARZ CARBINE WITH BRASS NOSECAP

$4,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3126

The overall length of this carbine is 37.50 inches. It has a 22.00 inch round .58 barrel with a notch rear sight and an iron broad based front blade sight. Barrel surface is dark with only light scattered pitting here and there. Bolster has original nipple and there is some light surface rust in this area but nothing major. Bore needs cleaned and has a ring of discoloration approx. a third of the way down from the muzzle. Rifling is faint.  Barrel has no markings. The barrel is attached to the stock by a tang screw and a single iron barrel band held in place by a band spring.

All iron surfaces on this weapon have a uniform dark appearance. The lock has a rounded front with a rounded point at back. There are no markings. Action works well.

The wood stock has a nice sleek appearance with good lines and signs of only light wear. A large crack throughout the wrist has been professionally repaired; it is visible in and around the wrist. Right side of butt at toe has a closed minor crack approx. 2.00 inches long. A little bit of wear shows on the wood behind the nipple. Observing the barrel tang in the mortise of the stock will show it is not a perfectly straight fit but this is evidence of the weapon’s being hand crafted and is typical of this arm. The same can be said of the fit of the buttplate to the butt of the stock.

Iron ramrod and swivel are a modern copy done off of an original Bilharz ramrod. Iron ramrod matches the rest of the weapon in color and has several areas of pitting or casting flaws. Lock screws are excellent, others show wear. Brass nose cap appears to have been cleaned.

Though these weapons do bear a serial number it is located on the rear face of the barrel. Discovering what that number is will have to wait for the next owner.

A very nicely restored and difficult to find Confederate arm. [ad]
