Invented and patented by a medical physician named Gilbert Smith of Buttermilk Falls, New York in late 1855, here is an original Civil War Smith carbine in very good condition used by Union forces during the Civil War. This single-shot, percussion shortarm is a .50 caliber, breechloading carbine that measures 39” long overall. This is an “artillery model” and features two sling swivels in place of the bar and ring utilized by the cavalry.

Excellent two-piece black walnut stock is made up of a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band. Stock retains its original finish with just a very few light dings and scratches. No inspector cartouche.

The octagonal portion of the barrel wears original dark bluing which transitions to a dark gray between the barrel band and the muzzle. Small inspector stamp “TH” visible on left barrel facet near frame. Barrel has original, brass blade front sight and folding rear sight. Bore is clean and bright, with very light rifling.

Underside of frame is stamped at the hinge with serial number “5365.” Left side of breech opposite the hammer bears an excellent patent mark “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Below this is a sharp patent mark “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857”. A fine maker’s stamp “MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS” is visible on frame at front of breech. All stampings are clean and sharp. Frame exhibits good original case colors. Carbine exhibits sharp, crisp mechanics. All screw heads in excellent condition.

A very attractive Civil War carbine.  [jet]
