CIVIL WAR SHARPS & HANKINS NAVY CARBINE

Item Code: 809-33

Known as the Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 carbine, this weapon is a wartime .52 caliber breechloading firearm designed by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an original example of that design called the ‘Navy’ type carbine which had its barrel covered with black leather as rust protection against the sea elements.  Produced by the Sharps & Hankins firm in Philadelphia, PA, this carbine was chambered for the No. 56 Sharps & Hankins rimfire metallic cartridge.

Short arm measures 38 5/8” long and weighs 8 pounds. By releasing the small finger release tab and operating the lever, the barrel slides forward to accommodate the copper cartridge. The 23 5/8” long, leather-covered barrel has a blade front sight and a typical Civil War ‘tangent style’ rear sight graduated to 800 yards with a leaf that pivots at the front and raises forward in an arc.  The black leather barrel covering is complete, original and in excellent condition. It is rare to find this leather covering on these arms without damage, tears or breaks.  The surface finish shows moderate crazing, but the finish is nearly complete. The leather sleeve remains unbroken at the two screw heads at the breech, and the leather seam stitching remains strong and tight.

Frame, hammer and operating lever are in excellent working order. Right side of the frame exhibits the distinct address “SHARPS / & / HANKINS / PHILADA” in four lines while the left side frame shows the patent “SHARPS / PATENT / 1859”. Stampings are clear. All lock screws are original and in excellent condition. Serial #10967 is stamped unto the upper plate tang.  Swivel is in place on the underside of stock. This “Navy” model had no carbine ring.

Carbine has crisp mechanics. Bore has some surface rust which should clean up well. Sharp rifling. Black walnut stock is very good condition. No cartouches. Brass butt plate untouched with a fine patina.

This Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 rimfire carbine is an exceptional example of a Civil War Federal Navy arm and would surely enhance any naval display or collection of arms. A true rarity with the leather sleeve remaining in this condition.  [jet]
