Model 1865 Spencer Repeating carbine in good condition. These were produced between 1865 and 1866 by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company of Boston, Mass. The Model 1865 carbine employed the controversial ‘Stabler cut-off’ device which allowed the carbine to be fired as a single shot weapon if desired. Other differences between the Model 1860 carbine and the Model 1865 were its beveled hammer nose and the reduction in caliber to .50”.

Barrel is 20” long and has the standard front blade sight and its original rear sight with its sliding “V” notch elevation bar. The barrel exhibits a smooth gray-brown coloring along its length. Bore has good rifling with moderate surface pitting. A pleasing mottled plumb/gray colored patina rests on the frame and receiver while stamped on top of the frame is a partially readable maker’s mark of “MODEL 1865” and “SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860 / MANUFACTURED AT PROV. R.I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.” Action works well. Hammer holds at half and full-cock and falls when trigger is squeezed. Stabler device operates properly. Magazine tube in the butt stock seats properly and has a strong spring. Serial #16901 is at the rear of the frame near the hammer.

Carbine has a two-piece walnut stock in good condition showing the normal dings, dents and scratches from wear and use. There is one hairline crack that extends 1 ½” on left side from butt plate along the line of the tube magazine. Stock also features one faint government cartouche on left side of wrist behind the saddle bar and iron ring. A sling swivel is present on the underside of the butt stock.

This is a complete, original, and used M1865 Spencer carbine and an excellent addition to highlight any military equestrian or weapons display.  [jet]
