The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a nice specimen of the New Model 1863 Sharps carbine that features serial # 79049 and was converted to centerfire after the Civil War.

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a “straight-breech” type receiver fitted to its walnut shoulder stock and fore stock. Worn barrel address, “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD, CONN” in front of rear sight. Rear, flip-up sight, is complete with strong “Lawrence” markings.  “NEW MODEL 1863” stamped to rear of sight.  Bore is clean with strong rifling.  Maker markings and patent designations on the lock plate and receiver are sharp and distinct. Serial number strongly stamped unto the upper plate tang. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Cartridge case ejector works well. Mechanics need work; strong main spring but no half- or full-cock. Iron bar tight and retains its iron sling ring.

Screw heads are in good condition. Gunmetal is in good condition with a dark gray/blue color; the lock plate retains some case colors. Overall the gunmetal has a nice, clean, matching appearance.

All wood is good with original rich color. There are no inspector cartouches visible. Usual light dings from age and use and one newer dent on top of the comb.

This New Model 1863 Sharps carbine conversion is a very good example of a favorite Civil War cavalry weapon that was converted to continue its service into the Indian War period.  [jet]
