NEW MODEL 1859 SHARPS CARBINE

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3783

The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is a very fine specimen of the New Model 1859 Sharps carbine that features serial #66044.

Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a ‘straight-breech’ type lockplate fitted to its walnut shoulder stock and fore stock. The very worn markings found on top of the barrel are “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO / HARTFORD, CONN.” in front of the sight and a stronger “NEW MODEL 1859” behind the sight. The bore is clean with sharp rifling.  All gunmetal is in good condition and has tarnished pewter color patina overall. Patent stamps are present. Sharps patent stamps appear on the lock plate and left side of receiver. Lawrence patent stamps appear on lock plate and on the rear, flip-up sight. Serial number stamped unto the upper tang of the receiver. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp.

Wood is good with wonderful saddle wear showing obvious field use. A name is carved into the stock but the saddle rub has nearly obliterated it. Appears to be “W.B. CARSON”. Perhaps William Carson who served in the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry (U.S.).  Of the 100+ “W. Carson” names listed in the Civil War Database, there were few that served in the cavalry, and of those this was the only unit known to have carried Sharps carbines.  One inspector’s cartouche is worn but visible. Features the iron patchbox in stock. All screw heads are in good condition.

This is a nice specimen of a favorite Civil War carbine.  [jet]
