M1863 SHARPS CARBINE IN ATTIC CONDITION

This Sharps percussion carbine is dark throughout, both the metal and the wood.

Barrel is stamped with a readable “NEW MODEL 1863” behind the flip-up leaf rear sight. The maker’s mark forward of the rear sight is in three lines and is faint. Proper front sight is present. Barrel surface shows light scattered pitting. Bore is dark and dirty with faint rifling and is no doubt pitted in areas.

Lockplate, receiver and hammer have light surface pitting and the area behind the hammer has been lightly cleaned and shows some bright metal. Maker and patent stampings are readable. Screw heads show wear. Mechanics are good. Original nipple is present but rusted. Top of breech block shows moderate pitting. Breechblock drops easily due to the keeper holding the triggerguard closed is a bit loose. Breechblock pin has broken tip. Serial number on receiver tang is C7515.

Wood displays numerous rough areas from handling and general use. Left side of the butt shows heavy wear. Right side of the butt shows equally heavy wear along with period carved initials of “CMC.” These initials are partly obliterated by scratches in the wood surface. No cartouche is visible. Saddle bar and ring are mounted on the left side. Forearm shows wear to match the butt. The underside of the forearm has a chunk of wood missing between the forearm screw and the receiver. Missing piece meas. approx. 1.50 inches long by 0.50 an inch wide. The right side of the forearm is also missing a piece of wood from the upper edge approx. 4.50 inches long.

Triggerguard, buttplate and the single barrel band are also dark and show moderate surface pitting. It is very heavy on the buttplate tang.  [ad]
