Item Code: 1000-405

Item is a Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. Carbine is a .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loader that employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

Barrel surface has hints of blue in the area of the muzzle while the rest has a somewhat mottled appearance. Surface is smooth with tiny amounts of pin-prick pitting scattered here and there. Both the original front and rear sights are present. Flip-up rear sight leaf is missing the top half. Bore is very clean with good rifling.

Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 31625. The patent mark on top of the frame is strong. Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. Receiver, hammer and lock have a mottled gray appearance as does the triggerguard. Behind the hammer is a strong stamping of “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. PROVIDENCE, R. I.” Action stops at half and full-cock but does not hold half-cock when trigger is squeezed. Operation of loading mechanism is excellent. Original nipple is present.

Black walnut stock has numerous small scratches as well as some dings and dents. There is no visible cartouche mark. Small 1.00 inch long sliver of wood is missing under the lock. Left side of the forearm has a horizontal closed crack running for approx. 3.00 inches starting where the wood meets the receiver and running forward. Left side of the stock is fitted with a saddle bar and ring.    [ad]
