M1859 SHARPS CARBINE THAT SHOWS USE

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-409

This Sharps percussion carbine exhibits signs of heavy use and is no doubt a weapon that saw service during the war. It is dark throughout, both the metal and the wood and shows no signs of having ever been cleaned.

Barrel is stamped with a readable “NEW MODEL 1859” behind the original flip-up leaf rear sight. The maker’s mark forward of the rear sight is barely discernable. Proper front sight is present. Bore is dark with good rifling.

Lockplate and receiver have strong maker and patent stampings. Screw heads show light wear. Mechanics are very good. Original nipple is present but worn. Top of breech block shows some pitting nicks. Serial number on receiver tang is 62514.

Wood displays numerous rough areas from handling and general use, especially in the area of the wrist. Left side of the butt shows great saddle wear. Toe of the stock has some surface finish loss. Right side of the butt has iron patch box that is dark to match all the other iron on the weapon. No cartouche is visible. Saddle bar and ring are mounted on the left side. Forearm shows wear to match the butt. The underside of the forearm has an old slightly open crack running approx. 4.75 inches starting where the forearm meets the receiver and runs forward. The interior of this crack shows dust dirt and patina proving that the crack is old.

Triggerguard, buttplate and the single barrel band are also dark.

This Sharps is a good, honest veteran of the war. [ad]
