This weapon is a Civil War Model 1863 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture. Carbine serial # C3016 or 103016 is located on the receiver tang. Overall the firearm measures 39” long and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock. All metal is bright with light mottling.
Barrel is stamped with a strong but slightly crooked “NEW MODEL 1863” behind the original flip-up leaf rear sight. There is a readable maker’s three-line address stamped just forward of rear sight. Bore has good rifling with light surface dirt. Left flat at breech bears “E.A.W.” mark.
Lockplate, receiver and hammer show hints of case colors. Lock face has strong maker and patent stampings back of the hammer and on the left side above the sling bar there is a fair patent mark. Screws show light wear. Mechanics are good. Original nipple is present and mostly clean. Top of breech block shows some small nicks in the rear edge.
Wood displays less than usual surface wear. Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with an iron band that matches the barrel in appearance. Present under the saddle bar and ring is a faint inspector’s cartouche.
Triggerguard and buttplate also show faint case colors. [ad]
