The Massachusetts Arms Company manufactured around 20,000 of these carbines between 1863 and 1865. This differs from the first model in that it has no patch box, or tape primer system among some other minor changes.

The frame is marked on the right side, “MANUFACTURED BY/ MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS” and the left side “EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC 6, 1859”. Frame retains original case colors. There are a few minor spots of oxidation on left side in the area of the patent stamp. Barrel retains its original bluing, as does the hammer. Bore is bright and clean with light rifling; .50 caliber. Barrel marked “S” by inspector on left side near breech. Mechanics are strong and crisp. This single shot percussion breechloader is serial number 16416.

Walnut stock is very good. Two strong cartouches are plainly visible. A very fine and attractive specimen.   [jet]
