EXCELLENT CONDITION ORIGINAL 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE

This Burnside 5th Model carbine was produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. It is a .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in excellent condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is depressed which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

Barrel has original front and rear sight and is held to the forearm by a single iron band. Barrel retains much of its original blue and has a light stamping of “CAST STEEL” between the rear sight and the barrel band. Bore is excellent. Very clean with good rifling.

Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of 32330. This area is also strongly stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25, 1856.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech. Frame and lockplate retain their case colors.

Lockplate is strongly stamped “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in very nice original condition and has two crisp cartouche marks on the left wrist area. Stock exhibits a handful of shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age.

Triggerguard retains its original blue. Screw heads are excellent although hammer screw shows the slightest wear. Buttplate also shows only slight wear.

Carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring as well as sling keeper on underside of butt.
