$8,500.00 SOLD

Item Code: 1000-415

Presented here is a Richmond-made, straight-breech Confederate Sharps carbine. Of the approximately 5,000 firearms called “Richmond Carbines” made for the Confederate government between 1862 and 1864, 1,900 were produced at the S.C. Robinson Arms Manufactory.  On March 1, 1863, the Confederate government purchased Robinson’s facility which became known as the Confederate Carbine Factory and began its own production run estimated at 3,000.

This carbine is a .52 caliber percussion arm with a 21.00 long round, rifled barrel. It features a simple open v-notch rear sight and a tapered blade front sight.  Stamped on top of the barrel near breech is “RICHMOND VA” but this is now almost unreadable due to pitting. Barrel is attached to the stock by single brass band held in place by a band spring at bottom of the forearm. Barrel surface has turned dark and has numerous spots of surface pitting. Bore has good rifling but is somewhat dirty and needs scrubbed.

Lockplate is dark and stamped with serial number, “1425”. Receiver is a typical Sharps-style with a trigger guard/lever activated, drop-down breech block. Receiver shows wear. Tang is pitted and looks to be stamped with serial number “2227” which is different from the number on the lock. Stamped in four lines behind the hammer is “S. C. ROBINSON ARMS MANUFACTORY RICHMOND VA. 1862.” Top surface of the breech block shows wear and several deep scratches. Hammer also shows some scratches at top. Action works properly. Original nipple is present.

Carbine has a two-piece walnut stock. The forearm is not as dark as the butt. It has the usual light wear from age. The right side has a closed 2.00 inch hairline crack near top edge. The butt has a brass buttplate and a 2.75 inch closed crack running from the back of the receiver tang towards the butt. The right side of the butt is carved with large letters “WS” while forward of this, in smaller letters, is “C M D.” Butt also shows a little more than the average wear from age, use and storage.

Left side of the carbine has the sling bar and ring. Single sling swivel is also present.  [ad]
