US MODEL 1850 SHARPS CARBINE

$1,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3856

This Model 1859 Sharps carbine was made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut circa 1859 to 1862. This weapon is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture including the patchbox. Weapon bears serial #59362.

The weapon measures 39” long overall and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock that has not been cleaned or sanded. All gunmetal bears a uniform light to moderate mottled gray patina.

Barrel is has both of the original sights. Rear leaf sight is missing the sliding appture. Rear sight base has a very strong, near crisp maker’s mark of “R. S. LAWRENCE PATENTED FEB. 15th 1859.” Stamped forward of the sight is a good maker’s mark in three lines that reads “SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG CO. HARTFORD, CONN.” with a very good “NEW MODEL 1859” between the breech and the sight. Bore has good rifling and light dirt. May clean up a little. The single iron barrel band is present and matches the barrel surface in color perfectly.

Lockplate, breech and hammer surfaces all match the rest of the iron on the weapon. Action is very good. Breech and lockplate have very light scattered pitting in spots and good to strong patent markings.

Entire stock shows light wear with the usual dings and dents. There is one closed crack on the bottom of the forearm running from the front of the receiver to just past the forearm screw, approx. 2.00 inches.  There are no visible cartouche marks. Iron patchbox matches the rest of the iron and opens and closes easily. Saddle bar and ring are mounted on left side. Left side of but has five small circles stamped in the wood that are arranged to resemble the five side on a die. Buttplate shows a little heaver pitting on the toe.  [AD]
