WELL USED 5TH MODEL BURNSIDE CARBINE

$850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1036-07

Original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine produced by the Burnside Rifle Co of Providence, Rhode Island. This model .54 caliber, single-shot, percussion breech-loading carbine is in fair to good condition. This weapon employed the uniquely designed, tapered .54 caliber Burnside brass cartridge. Carbine also features a hinged center receiver section that drops down when the inner latch of the triggerguard is activated which allows for quick insertion of the cartridge.

All metal surfaces on this carbine wear a heavy, spotted, mottled, dull appearance with numerous discolorations and areas of pin-prick pitting. Some hints of original finish remain here and there but not much.

Barrel has original front and rear sight with flip-up leaf. Barrel is faintly stamped forward of the rear sight with “CAST STEEL” and a year that looks to be “1862.” Barrel is held to the forearm by a single iron band. Bore has great rifling but is slightly dirty and may clean up.

Breech block and frame have a matching serial number of “3636.” This area is also faintly stamped “BURNSIDE PATENT / MODEL OF 1864.” Right side of the receiver has the single guide screw which allows for smooth operation of the breech.

Lockplate is marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. / PROVIDENCE, R.I.” This marking is strong and easy to read despite the mottling mentioned above. This area also exhibits moderate pitting. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present and shows wear. Numerous sub-inspector marks are visible on major components.

Black walnut stock is in fair, original condition and has two cartouche marks on the left wrist, one is good and the other is worn. Stock exhibits numerous shallow dings and dents consistent with use and age but no cracks. There is an old gouge in the wrist just behind the receiver and several smaller ones scattered between the forearm and butt. Forearm matches the butt with both having a tired, worn appearance. Left side is fitted with a sling bar and ring. There is also a sling swivel screwed to the bottom of the butt behind the triggerguard.

An original Civil War Burnside 5th Model carbine that saw some use.  [AD]
