This weapon is a Civil War Model 1863 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture. Carbine serial # C 3476 is located on the receiver tang. Overall the firearm measures 39” long and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock.

Barrel is turning brown but still shows some blue around the muzzle. Both the original front and rear sights are present. Rear sight has the single flip-up leaf with sliding appture. The sight base is strongly marked “R. S. LAWRENCE PATENTEE FEB. 15TH 1859.” Forward of the rear sight is a faint three line maker’s address of “SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN” while behind the sight is a strong “NEW MODEL 1863.” Bore has good rifling and is mostly clean but does have three spots of pitting half way down the barrel.

Lockplate has slightly worn maker and patent stampings back of the hammer and on left side above sling bar. Screws show light wear. Mechanics are good. Original nipple is present with some built up dirt around its base. Top of breech block shows some small amounts of pitting.

Wood surface displays scattered light dents and scratches but still shows some original feathering. Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with one bright iron band. Bottom of forend has a closed hairline crack running from the receiver edge forward for approx. 4.00 inches. Stock has no visible inspector’s cartouches.

A good example of the Model 1863 Sharps. [AD]
