The .50 caliber barrel is dark with a light coat of surface rust and oxidation spots scattered throughout. The iron blade front sight is mortised into the barrel above the muzzle. Rear sight is the single flip-up leaf with appture. Left barrel flat at the breech is marked “L.F.R.” Bore has very good rifling with only light dirt and dust. Should clean up nicely.

Receiver hammer and bolster all have a dusty gray appearance with light dirt and grime. Original nipple is present. Action is good and works properly. Left side of the receiver has crisp markings of “MANUFACTURED BY/ AMN M’CH’N WKS/SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” as well as “SMITH’S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857” and “ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A.” Bottom of receiver is marked with serial number 2063. Weapon properly breaks open for loading.

Two-piece black walnut stock with a 9” forearm held by a single barrel band. Wood is very nice overall and shows only light wear. Buttstock has thin line of chipping where the receiver meets the butt. Left wrist has is a nice single inspector’s cartouche.

Triggerguard and buttplate are dark. Buttplate shows a little more surface rust than the rest of the iron. Saddle bar and ring are present. Screw heads are very good.

The Smith carbine saw service with the following volunteer cavalry regiments: 1st Connecticut, 1st Massachusetts, 6th and 9th Ohio, 7th and 17th PA, 7th and 11th Illinois and the 3rd West Virginia Regiments.  [ad]
